Press - Adeline Olmer

The New York Observer wrote that Old Friends broke new ground “by opening a business selling dishes, cups and bowls from the turn of the century, all packaged with unique small items like vintage guest towels and napkins, natural soaps, vegetable pate and exotic teas”. Many of the dishes, cups and bowls were Depressionware, Lusterware or Limoges. Old Friends gifts were sold at retailers ranging from Neiman Marcus to Nordstrom’s.

Horchow wrote that the hand-selected collectible gifts are “vintage cups and saucers… unique mementos of a gentler era”.

Bridal Guide declared: “we love the idea of giving [bridesmaids] a dainty vintage teacup stuffed with gourmet goodies and a tiny picture frame”.

Cosmo called them “can’t be duplicated gifts… steeped in the past”.

Later, Old Friends expanded their offerings to include Face Lace, an alternative to the loofah. Gentle exfoliating cloths were artfully packaged with romantic items such as hat boxes, vintage plates, candles and special soaps.

No wonder The Daily News called Old Friends “a firm that puts a charming spin on recycling”.

Adeline received equally rave reviews for her work as a designer. The Tobé Report published a piece about the market trend called New Millenium, described as “a blending of hyper technology, alternative lifestyles and home comforts”. Read on as they talk about Adeline’s “creation of quiet spaces”.

“Adeline Olmer, a designer based in Manhattan, suggests that quiet places for downtime are a necessity. A Japanese garden, a fountain, a couch, a comfortable chair or simply a calm corner to sit and get centered, make phone calls or write notes. Olmer points out that while we used to use churches to find comfort, public spaces are where people are going these days.”

“Olmer suggests that while stores need to position areas for quick sale, they should also create areas of comfort. A please where people can order a cup of tea (on real china from a cart) or melt into a chair. These spaces can be used for display, live models or even a showroom.”
